Sophie Wong

Sophie Wong is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice honors the evolution of womanhood - where grit meets grace, and resilience is not just survival, but sacred growth. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, her practice is deeply invested in bringing awareness to our multicultural landscape, a diverse and often interwoven ancestral community. 

 

Through her evolving body of work, Sophie creates emotionally-centered portraits and narrative scenes characterized by earthy neutral tones, and a gripping sense of atmosphere. Her work reflects on the complexities of being - grappling with inner strength, and the emotional echoes of collective and personal experience. Drawing from her own upbringing, intuition, and ancestral connection, her art serves as a space for healing, reflection, and self-realization.

 

Sophie is a graduate of the prestigious New World School of the Arts in Miami, where her creative journey was first shaped by a rigorous foundation in visual arts. She went on to study at SUNY Purchase College in New York, further developing her technical skills and philosophical approach to artmaking. Over the years, she has cultivated a style that is both intimate and universal with conversations about heritage, resilience, and growth.

 

Since 2010, Sophie has worked actively within the South Florida arts community as a professional artist, public muralist, and educator. Her community-based projects emphasize connection and creative empowerment, particularly for young people and women of color. Her murals can be found across Miami-Dade and Broward counties, often incorporating themes of unity and cultural identity. She offers private mentorship and art lessons to young aspiring artists from her home studio and continues to use her practice as a tool for building confidence, curiosity, and cultural awareness in others.

 

In 2024, Sophie was awarded a Miami-Dade County Individual Artist Grant, a recognition of both her creative accomplishments and her commitment to community-centered art. Her work has been exhibited throughout South Florida in solo and group exhibitions, and she continues to grow her practice from her home base in Hollywood, Florida. Sophie has also been involved with ShangriLa Collective, a network of regional artists since 2017. 

 

As the matriarch in her family of three children, Sophie's practice is also interwoven with her experiences of motherhood, holding space for balance, intuition, and feminine strength. This perspective informs both her creative process and her approach to teaching, mentoring, and collaborating. Her work is not only a visual offering, it is a conversation between spirit, story, and self.
